Carolyn A. Howard has held a passion for the nonprofit organization for more than 25 years. This excitement began and grew as a result of her community service work as a corporate manager and then as an entrepreneur. Ms. Howard has become a leader in the nonprofit sector and in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania community. She has served as Executive Director of Clergy and Churches United (CCU) for nearly ten years. CCU is a faith-based nonprofit organization that secondarily assists programs that serve more than 1,000 children, youth and their families in the Hill District of Pittsburgh.

Ms. Howard has made notable strives in her nonprofit career as an Executive Director, Director of Development, and Consultant, that specializes in board development for effective fundraising and marketing of the nonprofit organization. She continues to assist nonprofit organizations sustain themselves and garner a place in the philanthropic markets and volunteer pools in the communities they serve. Ms. Howard’s solid experience and strategies developed over the years, targets organizations operating on smaller budgets. She has serviced more than 50 nonprofits in her consulting practice. Ms. Howard has served on both Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America (BB/BS) National Task Forces Committees for Cultural Diversity and Rebrand Marketing for the federation. At BB/BS, she developed an innovative model to mentor boys and girls in professional group settings, known as group mentoring.

Ms. Howard’s expertise are in the development of very tight by-laws for effective governance, Board of Directors recruitment strategies for diverse boards, and Board of Directors’ roles and responsibilities, all for fundraising effectiveness.

Ms. Howard has been a long standing member of the National Society of Fundraising Executive, now AFP, and has served various communities through nonprofits including The Junior League, Civitan Clubs, Kansas City Department of Community Development, Ronald McDonald House, Rotary Clubs, City of Topeka Volunteer Center, Family Services of Western Pennsylvania, Department of Health and Human Services (DHS), Allegheny County, Leadership Topeka and Tulsa Board Development Trainer, Topeka, Community Foundation and more. Ms. Howard has received many honors, recognitions and outstanding awards. She has been nominated Small Business Woman of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Pittsburgh 50 Women of Influence—Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, and 2006 Pittsburgh Black Extravaganza and Trailblazer Award and more.

Ms. Howard was educated at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, Missouri and holds a Certification in Nonprofit Management from the University of Missouri Graduate Bloch School of Business and Public Administration, Kansas City, Missouri. She has lectured extensively on various nonprofit topics. She has also self-published “How to Recruit an Effective Fundraising Board.”
